Background
Carbonic anhydrase IX (CA IX) is a cell surface transmembrane protein that catalyzes the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide. CA IX is widely expressed in the gastrointestinal tract and gallbladder. The expression of CA IX is also found in common epithelial tumors such as carcinomas of the esophagus, lung, colon, kidney, cervix and non-small cell lung carcinoma. The literature suggests it can be a useful indicator of clear cell renal carcinoma due to its consistent immunoreactivity in this tumor, which is absent in normal kidney tissue, chromophobe carcinomas or oncocytomas.
