Background
Feline Calicivirus (FCV) VP1 Protein is the major capsid protein of FCV, a non-enveloped single-stranded RNA virus belonging to the Caliciviridae family that causes highly contagious respiratory and oral diseases in cats. As the most abundant structural protein of the virus, accounting for nearly 90% of the viral capsid composition, VP1 is encoded by the viral open reading frame 2 (ORF2) and has a molecular weight of approximately 70 kDa, with a structure consisting of conserved regions and variable domains that contribute to its multiple biological functions. The VP1 protein self-assembles into an icosahedral capsid that encapsulates the viral genome, providing structural stability and protecting the genetic material from environmental degradation while mediating the initial interaction with host cells—specifically, its N-terminal and C-terminal regions bind to surface receptors on feline epithelial cells, facilitating viral entry through receptor-mediated endocytosis.
