Background
The H3N8 Avian Influenza NA Protein (Neuraminidase Protein) is a key surface glycoprotein of the H3N8 avian influenza virus, functioning synergistically with hemagglutinin (HA) to facilitate viral infection and spread. It belongs to the glycoside hydrolase family 34 and exists as a homotetramer anchored in the viral envelope, with each monomer consisting of a globular catalytic domain, a stalk region, and a transmembrane domain. The core biological function of NA is to cleave sialic acid residues from glycoproteins and glycolipids on the surface of host cells and viral particles. This cleavage step serves two critical roles: first, it removes sialic acid receptors that bind to the viral HA protein, preventing the aggregation of newly formed viral particles and enabling their efficient release from infected cells; second, it aids in the penetration of the virus through the mucus layer of the host respiratory tract, enhancing viral accessibility to target epithelial cells.
