Background
The Infectious Bronchitis Virus (IBV) S Protein also known as Spike Protein is a key glycoprotein on the viral surface that plays a critical role in viral infection by recognizing and binding to specific receptors on host cells to mediate viral entry it consists of two functional subunits S1 and S2 where the S1 subunit is responsible for receptor binding and determines viral tissue tropism and serotype specificity due to its high genetic variability while the S2 subunit facilitates membrane fusion between the virus and host cells as a major immunogenic protein it induces the host to produce neutralizing antibodies and serves as a core target for the development of IBV vaccines diagnostic reagents and antiviral drugs.
