Background
FAM171A2 is a conserved protein‑coding gene across vertebrates. It encodes a transmembrane protein that is mainly expressed in neuronal cells. A key biological function of this gene is regulating the secretion of progranulin (PGRN), a glycoprotein linked to neurodevelopment and inflammatory responses. Moreover, FAM171A2 acts as a membrane receptor mediating the internalization and intercellular transmission of pathological α‑synuclein, making it closely associated with multiple neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease. Due to its critical roles in neural pathological processes, it has become a potential biomarker and therapeutic target for related neurodegenerative disorders.
