Background
BFGF, a member of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) family, is a growth factor and signaling protein encoded by the FGF2 gene. FGF family members possess broad mitogenic and cell survival activities, and are involved in a variety of biological processes, including embryonic development, cell growth, morphogenesis, tissue repair, tumor growth and invasion. In normal tissue, bFGF is present in basement membranes and in the subendothelial extracellular matrix of blood vessels. bFGF is a non-glycosylated, heparin-binding growth factor that is expressed in the brain, pituitary, kidney, retina, bone, testis, adrenal gland, liver, monocytes, epithelial cells and endothelial cells. bFGF signals through FGFR 1b, 1c, 2c, 3c and 4. Recombinant Human FGF-basic is a 16.5kDa protein consisting of 146 amino acid.
