Background
Tau (acetyl K281) refers to the tau protein with an acetyl group added (acetylated) at Lysine 281 (K281), a specific post-translational modification heavily implicated in Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and other tauopathies, which disrupts tau's normal function, promotes synaptic dysfunction, impairs memory, destabilizes microtubules, and enhances toxic tau aggregation. Acetylation at K281 (often with K274/K280) is a key pathological event, leading to loss of microtubule binding, accumulation of tau tangles, and cognitive decline.
